Getting graphics for “View My Profile on LinkedIn” and “Follow Me on Twitter”

Nowadays it’s common to see “Follow Me On Twitter,” or “View My Profile on LinkedIn” buttons on people’s sites. On this site I’ve got those two buttons on the top right.

Why? Commercial web sites have on-site ads for their own goods and services, non-profit organizations have calls to donate or volunteer, so why not promote your social web activities on your main site as well?

For my new blog I wanted to add icons to help people connect with me,  here’s what I learned in the process.

1. LinkedIn. Graphics can be found on the LinkedIn site, but it was way harder to find the page than it should have been, that’s a baddie on LinkedIn’s part. It took me three clicks,  and two of them were on hard-to-see text links.  I had to search, save yourself the hassle: here’s the page on LinkedIn.

2. Twitter. On the Twitter site you can create a “Badge,” which is a bit of code that you put on your site that displays your most recent posts, plus a link to Follow you and more. Unfortunately they don’t have basic buttons for people who don’t want that big a Twitter presence on their main site. I did some hunting and found the motherlode on Twitip:  181 Free Twitter Buttons, Badges, Widget and Counters to Help You Find Followers. FYI, I got the yellow and blue button above from this designer.
